I am having a problem with the netbios name of samba.
when I want to access a share on samba from windows server using netbios name (e.g; \\cpu\storage ) it say " You are not authorized to access..." and when I ping to the server (e.g; ping cpu ) it shows me the correct ip address.
Now when I acces the share using IP (e.g; \\192.168.0.185\storage ) It opens the share.
I want to ask what is the problem with my samba file why it is not giving me the access using the netbios name. If there is some problem with the smb.conf file then what changes should be made in this file so that it allow me to access the share using netbios name.
Please Help
NO the "cpu" is unique I don't have any other system with this netbios name on my network. when I ping this system (e.g; ping cpu) it gives me the correct IP.
A "reserved word" means that this word has a special meaning. there for it may not be used in eg the name of a computer.
That you can ping it is not a garantee that you can use it, in some cases it could work in other it would not work.
arno I have changed the CPU name and the problem was fixed that now I am able to access the shares using netbios name but I came to know another problem which is
when I give the netbios name of length greater than or equal to seven characters it shows me the shares but when the netbios name is less than 8 characters it shows me the same message i.e; "you are not allowed to access from this station" can u tell me why this is happening
Hi, I've been using Samba for some time. My netbios name used to be visible to other computers on the network. Now it is not. It may have stopped being visible when I upgraded from openSUSE 11.1 to 11.2. The Samba version I am using is 3.4.3.
Anyone any ideas why?
Clients cann connect using the IP address but not the netbios name.
