Net access though proxy

OS: Fedora Core 1

Our college LAN provides internet access through a proxy server(Win2K). How do I get internet access on my Linux boxes through the proxy server. I tried setting the IP address & port no of the proxy server in Mozilla but it did not work. I have set static IP address to my Linux machines.

Secondly, how do i obtain access for FTP, ping and other TCP/IP apps through proxy. I was unable to do this on a Windows system too.

I have set up successful net access on LAN in the past using a default gateway , but never using a proxy server. Therefore my concepts regarding proxy access are not very clear.

you'll need to input the gateway's DNS address to get on the web through a proxy, and as far as getting access to ftp and others, you'll need the admin to forward those ports.

Windows proxys can be a bit tricky.
I know that some proxies for windows require the workstations to run a client to gain access to through the proxy. All depends on the setup.

if the server is a windowz 2k. mostly it use ISA. if u configure mozilla to use proxy server, it will surely work. (ftp http https will work). do u get some errors in browser like "access denied"?

Mostly it works. I know though that you can configure ISA to require an ISA client to be running on the clients for authetication.

6 months ago i tried to run mozilla behind ISA. it worked here (http ftp https). if ISA is configured to allow your client to access web, surely it will work.

ISA client software is neccessary to access other ports. (pop smtp telnet ssh ....)

but ISA is very bad. i dont advise anyone to use ISA. it always crashes. and it doesnt support some ports.
