need some local DNS help

I have been reading up on Bind, but have some gaps in my knowledge of how this all works together. This is my set up:

Our IPS has taken back most of our public IP's, so I have used some extendable static NAT translations in my routers. Now I can get 2-4 servers per single IP. The problem is my local users cannot bring up any internal servers ny name, so I need to use some local DNS. I am running redhat 7.3 with Bind. I would like to use Webmin to administer this. The cache name server worked right out of the box, but I need to create a master zone, or something to resolve our private IP's. I have tried a couple things, but haven't gotten it right. Does anyone have the time to give me the specifics on how to do this? I am using a 10.x.x.x network, and I need to access to internal web servers, and one mail server.

Thanks in advance

Raymond

Best is to set up another DNS server to cater for ur local 10.X.X.X network

In the IN A records put all the servers in 10.X.X.X address.

Then point ur windows PC in the private network to this DNS server under the DNS settings in windows

Typically this is how it should work.

Place the main DNS on the public network and place this DNS server on the private network

Hope this helps

Thank you for your reply.

I have a general knowledge of DNS when someone else is doing it for me. I request new "A" records, and MX records all the time.

What I am hoping to get here is the specifics of what files to create that will give me the end result of a 10.x.x.x network being able to access their local web and mail servers by name.

Could it be as simple as adding this info to the localhost master zone?

$TTL 86400
@ IN SOA localhost. root.localhost. (
1997022703
28800
14400
3600000
86400 )
IN NS localhost.

1 IN PTR localhost.
4.100.100.10.in-addr.arpa. IN PTR www.domain.com

If not, what files would I edit or create?

Thanks again for your help

hang on

Hang on, let me see if i can dig out some sample of DNS zone files that I've done.

Basically u need to edit 2 files

/etc/named.conf

and the actual zone files itself

and restart BIND8 with /usr/bin/named

This thread seems to have died without resolution. I am attempting the same configuration, namely to use DNS as a replacement for /etc/hosts on my private home network. Since I have no domain, per se, I do not know for sure how to setup my SOA record for a "null domain". I've tried the "@" (default), the name of my domain (morgans), ".", and "..". I've tried using the statement "ORIGIN .", but nothing seems to work. I think I am close, because "nslookup 10.10.10.4" works giving "4.10.10.10.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer biff". But the forward zone file doesn't work: "nslookup biff" returns "Host biff not found: 3(NXDOMAIN)". I would appreciate any pointers you might offer. I can supply my /etc/named.conf and /var/named/morgans.zone file, if you think you can help me.
