Hey all this is my first post here. I just set up a linux server with redhat 9. All I want to use it for is a file server, a place where my friends and I can upload and download large community files via ftp (unless there is a faster way). What I am looking for here is speed. I would like to be able to get the fastest transfer rates possible out of the server. Right now I am transferring over my network at about 6MB/ sec and via internet ranging form 5-600kb/sec. Is this normal or can i make it faster. I have cable internet which goes into a linksys router. The linux box is a p4 1.8 with 512mb ram an 80Gb HD and a 120GB HD. If any further information is need just ask and I will try to provide answers. Is redhat acceptable for what I want to do or is there a better distribution? I'm open to any suggestions.

Well, there are "ways" of making things faster. Typically, the benefit-to-annoyance ratio is fairly high. That is to say, you tweak a lot of junk for little gain.

Keep in mind, if you are using a cable modem, you are already in trouble. Cable modems are typically high on the download rate and low on the upload rate (from the perspective of the cable modem). Switch to DSL if this is a serious adventure.

Well 6MB/s is 48Mb/s (which is the metric used to measure network traffic). I would say that 48Mb/s is pretty good. Likewise, 600KB/s (which I assume is what you meant) is roughly 4.7Mb/s, which is outstanding for an Internet connection.

If you want a better idea of how well you're doing for your hardware, you'll need to specify what network card you have. The size of your hard drives doesn't have anything to do with the transfer speed (although if the seek time or bandwidth of your drives are slower than the network connection, that would matter).
