Need help with route command


I have a computer that runs folding named pokey.net, IP 192.168.0.5 that connects to smoker.net, IP 192.168.0.1, via ethernet. Smoker.net connects to the net through a serial modem. Looks like this, 192.168.0.5 >>> 192.168.0.1 >>> serial modem >>> internet.

This is the info I'm sure you need:

I had this working until I had to shutdown smoker the other day. Our power went out when hurricane Dennis came through. I lost 242 days of uptime too. I have not been able to get it to work since. I assume the reboot changed something. I do know I used the route command to make it work last time but it was so long ago that I can't remember the command and it is not in bash history either.

I don't use DHCP and didn't last time either. I'm not worried about security since I am on dial-up anyway. I'm not sure about iptables stuff. I read about it and it is greek to me. I need to go buy a networking book that is for dummies then get a real book and read it. So keep it simple and if you are good at explaining things, give it a try. Maybe my light bulb will go off or come on one.

Oh, ssh works fine. Pokey is set up like a server. It has no monitor or keyboard stuff. I can also ping smoker from pokey so that works. When I try to ping google or something, it does not transmit any data over eth0 that I can see. I watch it on gkrellm. I'm not sure if it is pokey or smoker that needs a kick, maybe both.

Thanks for the help. I need to add some units to the LQ team.

Could have sworn that I did that, about 50 times I might add. It did work. One thing I did notice though, I had to hit c twice for folding to connect to the server and then it sort of hesitated a little bit. Got to love that gkrellm though. It sure does help.

Oh, ping doesn't really work, at least not all the way. My ISP has it blocked but it does make it through the modem and I can see it go through on gkrellm.

Thanks much. It transmited the data and is crunching on the next one.

Another question or two now. Will that survive a reboot? both machines though. Can you explain that or do you just know what to type in?

In order for it to survive a reboot, you'll most likely need to add that to one of your system initscripts. Your sig says you use gentoo, so if that's in use, then you can edit /etc/conf.d/net to have:

in it. Obviously, don't delete the rest.

What kind of ISP blocks ping? That's an incredibly basic diagnostic tool. I hate ISPs that decide what their PAYING customers can do with their bandwidth. </rant>

Have you ever had any issues with folding? I used to run it on one of my boxes, but about 24 into it, I would get filesystem corruption on one of my hard drives. This occured on two separate occasions and two separate disks, so I'm a bit hesitant to start up again, but would love the chance to.

Sorry for the long post with many things unrelated to your original inquiry. About 1 am I get a bit chatty.

Is that suposed to work because it didn't.

I have not had any trouble so far on either rig. I did have someone say they did and they installed it manually, not using emerge, and it worked fine. I would think it was the same thing though. It is sort of basic.

Pokey is a AMD 800MHz rig that is really slow as far as memory and hard drive. It has a 2.5GB drive and 128 meg of memory. All it does is folding, nothing else. I did a basic install of Gentoo 2005.0. I followed the guide up till time to reboot into the new OS, got the network to working then moved it to the closet less a monitor, keyboard, mouse and a case I might add. It sits in a meat box, sort of about the size of a pizza box. I have some CD cases under it to make sure the box doesn't conduct on the pins on the mobo. I did just put a bigger chipset cooler on it though. That thing got hot with that tiny little heat sink it did have on there. Much better now. I can touch it at least. The new one came off a old 486 CPU. It's a big heat sink for a chip set. I also have a fan blowing across the mobo and such.

On the blocking ping, it is actually my ISP's ISP. They did that when a virus came out that was using ping for something. That is what I was told anyway. I thought about starting a couple dozen pings and just letting it sit there running all night. I'm sure they log all that crap. Might get their attention. Fill up their logs for them. They use Linux though. I hate to be that mean, since they use Linux. If it were windoze, I'd do it.

Don't worry about being chatty. I'm chatty all the time. I am doing this internet dating thing and you should see the emails, maybe I should call them books, I send them. I'm honest though. I don't hide anything either. I also weed them out pretty quick. I catch things pretty quick.

Oh, I forgot, smoker is a 2500+ AMD rig with a Abit NF7 2.0 mobo. It has 1GB of ram and it is a full install with all the bells and whistles. I built it myself by the way. It is in a large server case with the side off of course. It is in my sig to. Just remembered that. It is getting late here.
