I have a windows box as my dhcp server. i've installed mandrake linux 9.1 on another pc. however i'm having problems connecting my linux box to the network.
my windows network has a network 192.168.0.0 i wanted my linux box to be part of that network because one of my windows box has internet connection sharing enabled. my eth0 is actually PortGear Ethernet USB, which is a USB device which acts as an ethernet card.
I've tried ways of configuring eth0 using netconfig and mandrake control centre but i'm still stuck as doing so.
can someone suggest a solution for connecting my linux box to that network? if u need more details plz reply too.
I've never tried running a linux box through a windows ICS, usually the other way around.
I would guess that you could just open your settings for eth0, give it an IP address of something like 192.168.0.2 then set your gateway as 192.168.0.1 (just guessing that's the IP address for the Windows box).
If you want the Linux box to get it's address from DHCP, just check the "Obtain Automatically" box and enter the IP for your DHCP server.
I remembered trying to get a eth0 set up using mandrake control. It worked at first, but konqueror (web browser) didn't connect to the internet. So, I put the mandrake laptop away a while. When I first tried it, it did connect using DCHP and ICS.
This is what I am guessing. First, connect all the physical network cables togther first. Boot the host computer with internet connect. Then, boot mandrake. Make sure the network cable is connected to the network already.
try these commands as well to find out if you do have internet connection through mandrake
tail -f /var/log/messages
The command above, you must run as root
If you are using mandrake 9.1, try this command called dhclient
To locate it, try "whereis dhclient"
