This could be a Newbie question, but it's also relevant here. I'll post it in both places just in case. I'm setting a RH9 box to act as a buffer for my Internet for my work. Here is my setup:
RH9
eth0 (static IP conntected to ISP)
eth1 (DHCP assigned from Linksys Router)
iptables forwarding, firewall, and nat all enabled and running (according to the directions set out in RH9 Bible)
Router
Windoze
NIC (DHCP with gateway of eth0's IP)
I can ping back and forth between the two machines. However, the Windoze machine will not see or connect to the Internet. I am not sharing files, just passing through the Internet (and of course, email, AIM, etc...) I've seen the answer in these forums before, but can't seem to find it right now when I need it. Your help is appreciated.
you have the Linux box connected to the ISP...and to a port on the router?
your description of the setup is confusing. if you ahve it setup the way u explained....it makes sense that it doesnt work.
it should be 1 of 2 ways:
Code:
INTERNET
|
|
Linux Box
|
|
Linksys switch WAN port or UPLINK port
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
| |
| |
host1 host2
OR
INTERNET
|
|
Linksys Router WAN PORT
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
| |
Linux Windows

With the help of some others, I did make 1 change. I changed the DHCP on eth1 to a static IP address. But below is a "diagram" of hte set up
ISP
|
Linux eth0 (static IP)
Linux eth1 (static IP)
|
Linksys router
|
Windoze box (DHCP from router)
Hope that helps. Sorry about the double post. Missed that in the TOS. Won't do it again.
Why are you using the router between the linux and windows box? I am connecting my linux box with a crosslink cable directly in my windows laptop, and it works fine in terms of ping. If a router is definetly needed that is important to me as well.
I am also starting to set up IP masquerade, so we might be having the same start up problems. I also started a thread about it a couple of hours ago.
LMK what you find out. I've heard (and know from experience) that crossover cables are not all that reliable. Drops things too often to rely on for my work. I'm not having good luck so far with this.
Since you are running red hat, I think the IP masquerade howto will cover your problem. It seems like ipchains and stuff is not set correctly, although your kernel modules are running. Meanwhile, I am having some difficulties in upgrading from 2.2.19 to a 2.4.18 kernel. I have to this due to some local vulnerabilities in the kernel and I get into some initrd trouble.
