NAS drive mount on demand

Hi Folks

I think this is the right place , I have an Iomega NAS drive that is connected via ethernet to my pc but the mount is done manually i do not really want to have it mounted automatically via fstab as sometimes it is not connected and this causes big hangups waiting for something to happen .

What i would like to achive is if i call for data from the drive it is available but if it get unplugged or similar i dont end up with a froze system

Running Arch Linux x86-64 Linux 7-of-9 3.3.8-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Tue Jun 5 15:20:32 CEST 2012 x86_64 GNU/Linux KDE 4.8.4 .

Any help or ideas pointers ect

Thanks Pete .

You can set it to mount via automounter. This is specifically designed to do what you want - it mounts a filesystem when any read or write is done and leaves it mounted for a short period then unmounts it automatically.

Do a web search for "automounter tutorial" and you'll see several hits for it.

Note that some applications have issues with the delays inherent in waiting for the mount but for most purposes it works well.

Also if you're worried about hangs when the exporting server is unavailable you should look at options for NFS mounts as there are some that prevent this but the trade off is that it could cause failures when there are momentary blips.
