Naming a mandrake 10 desktop pc for ssh, and linking to an OSX iBook

Hi,

I use ssh at work to access a number of different linux boxes, but I've no real idea of how networking works.

At home I have a mandrake 10 desktop PC connected by ethernet to a linksys wireless router which also talks to my 12" iBook running osx.

I would like to be able to have these 2 computers talk easily to each other to back up files etc. I only know of ssh to do this. Is there others?

OSX has a box in a nice gui to name the laptop. I called it "herbig." On the mandrake PC if I "ssh herbig" then I log in fine, however I can't find a way to name my linux PC.

My aim is to use the desktop as a place to keep files that can then be accessed easily by the laptop. Is there a better way to do this?

Thanks.
