I just ask because I'm wondering...
If you make a dial up connection with win98 or any other win, you can just connect and browse the internet. But how about Linux? I mean, do really always have to ask the provider for the address of its nameservers? Isn't there some way to pass this information automatically? Even if you're behind a gateway (which does the dialling).

It depend how your dhcp client is configured. 'man dhcpcd' to learn how to get your slack box to enable the correct dhcp client options. If you router/firewall rig can do it for windows there's no reason it can't do it for Linux. The only difference you will probably run across is the kooky way windows has named the client-id option.

Actually, what I want to know is how does Windows know the nameserver's ip, or how of when does this information get passed to the client machine.
