nameserver setting in network/interfaces ignored

I'm configuring an ubuntu server with static ip and manually entered nameserver. Everthing I've read says to put nameserver setting in /etc/network/interfaces, and when you do, /etc/resolv.conf is automatically generated with these settings. Yet when I do this, resolv.conf is not changed, and does not get automatically generated. I might add that resolvconf is not installed on this box.

Is it the Ubuntu way to manually edit resolv.conf? Or am I missing something? I can put nameserver settings in resolv.conf, and it works, but everything I read says this is not the correct way to do it.

Ook,

There is nothing wrong with editing the resolv.conf file; however, if you are running the NetworkManager package, it will overwrite the resolv.conf file. FRom a terminal, type
Code:
nm-connection-editor
and it will start the graphical NetworkManager package. If this package is not installed or not running, you can edit the resolv.conf file without fear.
