named running as 6 pid's ?!?!

Running BIND 9.2.1 on Dapper, I noticed that named is starting up with 6 different pid's. Killing the 1st one kills them all, but trying to kill any of the others has no effect.

On the box right next to it, BIND/named are running the way they should with a single PID.

Checked all the configurations, restarted named a few times even rebooted the system.

Does anyone have any leads what's up with this?

you bind is compiled with pthreads; multiple thread for multiprocessor.

thanks for the tip.

its kind of funny since i didn't compile it, but installed it from the exact same binary package I just copied over from my other machine. I wonder why it would thus set up pthread?

Moreover, since I didn't configure it for pthread, can you tell me the best way to remove pthread? (It really seems to slow down the dns.)
