Exclamation Name redirecton

My domain name let's say mydomain.xyz.xwyk is strange to say and to remember i wish to have something just more friendly let's say mydomain.it for people connecting from internet by browser .
Can this be accomplished just by using mod_rewrite apache2 module on server side ? Or by apache2 virtualhost directive ServerAlias ? Would be possible to have name redirection a dns level , instead ???? Using my local bind9 ? I run debian etch .

First, you should own mydomain.it
Then you contact the name service provider of mydomain.it and add a CNAME entry for it pointing to your longer name or an A entry pointing to your global ip. If your top level dns server has the ip of your local dns server against the NS entry of mydomain.it, then you can make the changes locally.
