I added up a nagios check to ping gmail (216.239.63.107) to see if the host is up or down. When I click on the "Service status" for ping in nagios it says OK but the Host "gmail" is red and shows down. It says
The ping command status is OK, the host command status is red.
Yeah, you mentioned that. Few things. Upgrade to -current? If you > (host|service) detail > hostname > Re-schedule the next check, does it turn back to green? What's the check command for this host? (view config > hosts > under "Host Check Command") Is it ping (with other values)?
