My router does not identify my pc name

I am trying to link 2 pcs via a router. On my mandriva pc I have changed the etc/hosts files to include the IP address and name of both pcs. I am trying to set them up with static ip addresses

When I change to root. My prompt tells me the correct name.

I am able to ping both IP addresses from the Mandriva pc, but not from the other one.

Also my router can see the Mandriva PC (and internet works ok), but has not identified the name.

Is the name held somewhere other than the host file? Have I missed something?

Thanks

Not all routers will store the host names to resolve against their IP. Since you have a static network, you can address each connected host by name if you put the names in /etc/hosts on all the hosts. (The router has nothing to do with this file.)

It is possible to get a host to assert it's name to a network router... but, as said, HW Routers seldom pay attention to this. You could also set a DNS service on one machine and set the router to look there first before checking the isp DNS server.
