MSN Messenger not working

This machine-XUBUNTU has 2NICs. One connects to PPPOE ADSL and the other one to a notebook using WinXP.
So I've been reading this guide in how to enable internet sharing:
https://help.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/serve...iguration.html

And so I pasted this line into the terminal:
Code:
sudo iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -s 192.168.1.0/16 -o ppp0 -j MASQUERADE
And the internet started working on the client WinXP notebook! BUt I'm unable to connect to MSN MESSENGER from it!

So then I installed FIRESTARTER and set it up properly and MSN MESSENGER did connect!
But I dont want FIRESTARTER or any other kind of FW.
So what else am a missing here?

Basically what you're missing is common sense: because 0) it apparently works using Firestarter so there's no valid reason to complain, 1) you shouldn't run a GNU/Linux box w/o firewall, period.

Im not keen on using Firestarter because it has its own problems. Like writing its logs to /var/lo/messages...
And it doesnt work together with DNSMASQ...

Firestarter is just a GUI for the userland tool "iptables". If you have problems with a GUI you can deal with iptables without using any NP.

Like writing its logs to /var/lo/messages...
That's "iptables -j LOG" and that's not a problem but a feature and a must. How else are you going to tell what traffic is denied? If it logs too much then you should tweak and tune your ruleset.

And it doesnt work together with Dnsmasq...
Probably a firewall thing. The Dnsmasq FAQ says:
Quote:
For the dnsmasq daemon to operate it's vital that UDP packets to and from ports 67 and 68 and broadcast packets with source address 0.0.0.0 and destination address 255.255.255.255 are not dropped by iptables/ipchains.

THe main problem happens here because DMESG gets polluted with packets, so I cant see any real output of it! And also I've looked thru FS mailing list and all of the proposed fixes dont work!!!

Yeah its a known bug in Firestarter which still hasnt been resolved. And also I've looked thru FS mailing list and all of the proposed fixes dont work!!!
###################

So could we just get back on the subject! ATM I dont want a firewall perhaps at a latter time.
I just want this XUBUNTU machine to have proper internet connection sharing!

But this line, which according to UBUNTU guide should give me Internet Sharing doesnt work properly! Since the client computer cant connect to MSN with it.
Code:
sudo iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -s 192.168.1.0/16 -o ppp0 -j MASQUERADE
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
