Moving a server to another part of network and still keeping it as a server

Help! My boss wants me to move one of the servers on the company network to the place where another computer on the network is. I have no idea about networks or hardware. All I know is making webpages. The diagram of the network looks very complicated. Just how am I going to do this without killing the internet connection or removing everyones LAN connection? Do I just put one cable in one of the hubs in the place of where the other cable is in yet another hub?

If you are very lucky, yes. Unfortunately you say that "The diagram of the network looks very complicated". I don't think anybody can reasonably help you in a forum with limited information like that. Your best bet by far is to find someone in person who understands networking and ask for help. If you want someone to try to help across a forum, we're going to need much more information than that: descriptions of networking hardware (hubs, switches, routers, vlans, etc) and logical setups (ip addresses, netmasks, vpn, etc). Also note that anybody helping across a forum will not be able to help you troubleshoot. We can only see the information that you give us.

  • You do mean "move" in the physical not the logical sense?
  • Assuming it's physical, will the "other computer" be disconnected & removed to make room for the "moved server"?
  • What OS's are the 2 running?
While there is a good chance you will need in person help, it's also possible that we may be able to "walk you through it" if it's a fairly simple set up.

What happened?

Did you solve the problem?

If so, how? (Your solution may help someone else.)
