mount: localhost:/etc failed, reason given by server: Permission denied

Hi all:

Of course I'm a newbie - and I'm sure this is pretty straight forward, but here's the issue:

I have to set up a Linux System using Fedora 5 to allow remote access from an older Unix system. For security, I set up a directory with only the files that the Unix system requires access:

[root@localhost ~]# mkdir UNIX1

Now, I followed an example in from a book to set access:

[root@localhost ~]# exportfs -a

Then I initialized NFS:

[root@localhost ~]# /etc/rc.d/init.d/nfs start
Starting NFS services: [ OK ]
Starting NFS quotas: [ OK ]
Starting NFS daemon: [ OK ]
Starting NFS mountd: [ OK ]

Then I followed with:

[root@localhost ~]# mount -t nfs localhost:/etc /mnt

That's when I received the following:

mount: localhost:/etc failed, reason given by server: Permission denied
[root@localhost ~]#

Any ideas? Any suggestions?

First of all why did you make a UNIX1 dir?

Then I think that /etc might be unmountable for a normal user over the net, think only the system or root can do it localy unless you give it permission to do so.
Perhaps give a group permission to root system folders over nfs.
Never used it just using logics here =)

The UNIX1 dir was just the name I selected. I figured 'what's in a name?' Was that not a good thing to do?
