Modem programming and serial port

Hey there,

i am a total newbie to linux so i hope i will include all the details needed to make my question as precise as possible.
Ok so i'm runnin mandrake 8.2 and i want to be able to program cable modems (changin or updating firmware) using the linux equivalent of CRT terminal under windows through serial port.
I have the cable modem connected to the serial port, now how do i configure the serial port to be able to use it?
What should i do to have the serial port recognizin the cable modem?
What terminal should i use and how to use it?

The cable modems i want to program are Com21's ComPort series.
I hope i wasn't too messy in my decription, if so lemme know and i will clear it up as much as i can.

Thank you for readin me and givin some of your time to help me solve my problem.

Cheers,

Drickx
