Unhappy modem not working

Hi all

Recently I installled mandrake 9.2. I have been accessing the internet via a dialup modem and kppp up untill now.

I can still dial into my ISP ok but when I try to surf the net with mozilla, nothing goes through the modem and mozilla says that the page (google.co.nz) is unreachable (and no, it is not set to work offline). This also happens with any other page. amsn wont go through either and im having to revert to windoze to go on the net (grrr).

This has only happened in the last few days and I would really like some help.

Thanks

See if you can browse with ip numbers rather than url names..

That would indicate you have dead dns servers given by your isp.
You can add new dns numbers manually, but the dialup script will reset to your ISP issued numbers.

Also check you have any "proxy" settings turned off..

what modem do u use?

I had also some problems with my USB DSL modem, try using 'pppd'. Don't know if it will work with dialup's but it works fine here now .. good luck.

thanks for your replies

I would enter dns servers for my isp but the adresses that are given in the documentation i have are for mac (would this worry anyone?)

It also seems that my modem does this randomly. I was able to download some rpms via rpm drake and amsn also went. I didnt try browsing as i didnt get around to it but im still wondering why it randomly decides to not work. (is it a setting in mozilla perhaps?)

I am using a hardware modem (not a win modem) on /dev/modem

I hape this gives you a better insight into my problem
mor information is available on request

thanks again

BTW kppp is a gui fronend for pppd (or so im told)

You haven't recently activated the Mandrake firewall by any chance? There seems to be a problem with it - many people here seem to switch it off and use something like Guarddog.
