Modem not recognised on Ubuntu or Suse

Following a vanilla install of either Dapper Drake or Suse 10.1 everything works except my modem, which was the principal reason for thinking of changing to Linux.

The modem is a GURU Gart2-4112 2-port modem router with one USB and 1 ethernet port, which claims to be OS independent. It works on the USB port in XP (I have not tested the ethernet), so hardware and setup must be OK.

With both Linux distros I can get into the modem's "smart setup" screen on the USB port but not the ethernet port. On USB the modem's internal test pings OK but the modem test fails and only 3 of the five fairylights are on (it should be 4/5). On the ethernet port only 2 lights are on (power and I think ADSL)and I cannot get into the smart setup screen.

In the manual, which only refers to Windows, they do not mention the need for a driver, although one (for Windows) is hidden on the CD and is essential. I guess no driver would be needed if the ethernet could be made to work?

Please, does anyone have any suggestions?

Many thanks.

Ah, yeah, use the Lan port already. Don't bother with the usb.

Thanks, but is my lan card being recognised? How do I check and what do I do if it is not recognised?
