modem not being detected

On Redhat 9 - kernel 2.4.20-8, I have been through Network Configuration for a dial-up modem network connection. It created a network device "ppp0". When I try to activate it I get
the message "activating network device ppp0, please wait", and this process never terminates. The modem is never accessed - I watched & listened. Network Device Control states it is active, which it isn't. Modem is a Netcomm Simplicity 56KB connected to COM2 - whatever Linux device that is.

Do you know if your modem is a Winmodem? (Basically a software modem?)

That was the problem I had. My modem was a software modem, and I needed to download Linux drivers for it.

If it is a Winmodem, check out www.linuxant.com/drivers.

I've never heard of either a "winmodem" or a "software modem".
It's basically a Hayes modem with Netcomm extensions. The only
thing I had to do it was turn down the volume! Same thing with my previous 33.6KB Xlink.
BTW the URL quoted does not exist.

Sorry. My bad. The url is picking up the ending period. So, you really want to go to www.linuxant.com/drivers

My understanding of a software modem is that the modem control is done by software drivers and not by the hardware (chipset) on the modem. It uses Hayes commands for modem control. (I guess these modems are cheaper to make - hense there's so many of them.)

Hope this helps.
