Unhappy MODEM failed to start

Hi all,

im setting up an ipcop box (or trying to)

using Bewan PCI st 888 adsl modem
setting are:

VPI: 0 VCI: 38
Modem: Bewan ADSL PCI st
Modulation: Automatic
Protocol: PPPoA Encapsulation: VCmux

The system logs are rather repetitive:
ipcop Dialling cpbb.
ipcop ERROR: Bewan ADSL MODEM failed to start
ipcop Dialling cpbb.
ipcop ERROR: Bewan ADSL MODEM failed to start
and so on... there is the occasional "ipcop Dial failed: 256"

Ive tried this sed -i -e 's/use locale//' /var/ipcop/header.pl but it hasnt done the trick

i know my way around linux fairly well but ive never done anything with modems before. any help would be much appreciated

thanks
