Modem connection speeds
 

Well, it's sort of networking :D.

Under Mandy, using kppp I always seem to get a connection speed of 56k. Since the phone systems down my end of the country are pretty much terrible, I very much doubt if this is really the case. Why would kppp be reporting a false connection speed? How could I 'benchmark' my connection speed to get the true speed?

PS The only time I've ever come across this before, myself, is under Win95. If you set the maximum connection speed to something above 56K, then you would always get that speed reported. I have, however, got the modem setup as 56K under kppp.

i always thought on a modem, the connected as speed after connecting was just the speed that you initially connected to, but is never the actual speed. my modem on my windows box when i dialed out always stated it was connected at 115k or something like that.. instead of 56k... hmmmm..

It seems to me that kppp is reporting the speed at which it's talking to my modem, rather than the speed at which my modem is talking to the other modem. Yeah, I got that as well. I went into the modem properties and set the maximum connection speed down to 56K and now it seems to report true connection speeds (33K or lower - I did say the phone systems down my way were bad). The problem is, I do that under kppp (set the maximum to 56K) and it still tells me that I'm connection at 56K, when I know that can't be right.

The problem is how the modem reports it's connection. Some modems (when asked for the connection speed) report the bps between the two modem connected modems, but others (about 50% as far as I can see, I have a good number of modems) report the bps between the computer and the UART. You should check your modem manual to see if you can issue a command to report the speed between the two modems or set one of the S Registers to make the modem report the correct speed, and then add it to your modem Init string. Unfortunately man modem manuals now don't offer this info, so you may be out of luck.
