Mixed dhcp and static network possible?


On my home LAN, I would like to set up my wifi printer with a static address but permit other computers to log on to the network via DHCP. Besides the wifi printer, there are three computers which are always on the LAN, but we also frequently have guests who want to log on to surf the net or sometimes to print.

Right now, I've got everything working with DHCP. However, I find that the printer's IP address changes sometimes after a network reboot, which makes the printer inaccessible until I reconfigure the printer on each computer's network. Surely there's a better way!

My LAN normally consists of one Linux box, two WinXP boxes, and my HP6980 wifi printer.

You can have static and dhcp assigned on the same subnet. In your dhcpd.conf you can set the range to hand out IP address outside of what the static IP are already set. You could also configure dhcpd.conf to set addresses based on the hardware MAC address of the requesting client. This article has an example:
