First let me say that some of the new Linux distros are super and they're really making big strides every time I try one. M$ should be afraid. Most recently I loaded Mandrake 9.0...sweet. The NIC in the box was a D-Link DWL-520+. D-Link is supposed to be releasing a Linux driver for that next month. In the meantime I swapped in a Netgear FA310-TX 10/100 ethernet adaptor. Mandrake doesn't list a driver for it. I tried Tulip, which is supposed to be compatible, but drakconnect can't find it.
Does anyone know where I might find a list of manual settings for that card? I don't have the original docs on the card anymore.
I feel lame using the GUI, but that's what I need to start with for the moment. I'll get better at it, it's my business. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
One of our admins at work suggested I try the NE 2000 driver instead. According to him tulip can be problematic in some instances. Though keep in what's problematic to me might be a piece of cake for some of you.
Worst case I'll wait until next month for the D-Link driver. I'm still impressed with Mandrake as a desktop. Resolve a few technical issues and it's ready for prime time. Picking out packages is a breeze. Office tools, Email, databases, spreadsheets, it's all there. Can't wait to try Red Hat and Suse.
Even though the learning curve is a little daunting at first, it's still a better way of computing life.
