Me <--> internet <--> dd-wrt router w/ VPN <--> home server - possible ?

Today I'm using ssh to connect to home server when I need to , but I'm interested in using VPN instead.

Router is running dd-wrt today , with static and global IP.
"Clients" will be xp laptops at work and kubuntu laptop elsewhere.
Home server is running gentoo.

Is all I need the dd-wrt VPN firmware ?

Is it possible to make it run with IPsec as opposed to pptp ?

When installing a dd-wrt image, be sure to install the VPN image. This will add OpenVPN to the dd-wrt image. dd-wrt.com has a howto page for setting it up--it's quite simple and an excellent VPN. Clients are available for Linux, Windows and Mac.

Sounds great, will try upgrading the firmware sometime soon.

Ideally, vpn will make me able to share my linux desktop with my not-so-into-nix family without them having to log in via ssh and do start-my-vnc-session-script. I've set it up with putty sessions and all but poor ppl need point and click

One question has come to mind, and googling have not helped me :

If I need vnc / in-front-of-the-computer-like access to the one and only server running at home. Would it perhaps be better to NOT
run openvpn in the router and rather run it at the server itself ?

PLEASE post your thoughts!

Ideally, VPN should be on the router--it's the network device that controls all access in and out of the home network. VPN on the router means that all devices *behind* the router become equally accessible. In addition, you don't need to worry about the complexity of forwarding VPN traffic *through* the router to a specific machine. Let the router do the routing...
