MDK 10.1 Networking & WUSB11 v2.6

I have Mandrake 10.1 installed and I'm using a Linksys wusb11 v2.6 that I've had working with Linux in the past. I'm using the at76c503 atmel driver, ifcfg-wlan0 is configured properly, and the USB adapter successfully connects to my router. The problem is that eventhough I'm connected to my router through the WUSB11 (Mandrake also indicates the WUSB11 is up & connected), mandrake still tells me my networking is down. I'm unable to ping other machines on my network. How can my network adapter successfully connect while at the same time my network is down. Is there a way to set wlan0 as my default network connection? Maybe my firewire card is causing some type of conflict since it is recognized as a network adapter. I do have the ohci1394 modules added to the blacklist but that didn't help. One more note: this is not a firmware issue. Are there any gurus out there that can figure this out??
