Unhappy mandrake 9.1 wont autodetect or something

ok i think ive found out part of the problem to why i cant connect, but i dont know what to do. Ive got a Ambit USB Cable modem and in the modem it has a VT6102 Rhine 10/100 nic card in the modem i think. Cable modems dont have nic cards do they? but anywhos... It finds and installs all the modules and confguraions of the VT6102 Rhine but when it comes to the Ambit Cable Modem i go into the hardware configuration it has all the stuff except for the modulation. Under modulation it says unknow and has placed this device on the other tab in the hardware configuration.

Im currently running Mandrake 9.1 and am using my friends computer which is on the same internet im supposed to be on same with my other friends computer. I cant get on right now and i want to.

If anyone needs anymore information other then what i gave them, ill tell them, but its just how do i fix the modules... do i download somthing type in a command or what. I heard somewhere there was a command to type in a configuration file that preety much says oh cant find the module just use the darn thing... but i lost that page.

The only way ive been able to get on the internet is through redhat but for some reason that is really glitchy on my computer and restarts, relogs me, or freezes on me... dont ask me why it does that but i just follow the books orders on how to install it.

But i really need help with this and if anyone can help i really need the help...

Hi there from Malaysia ...

You need to clean your thinking and your posts.

1) What do you have (PC, NIC, Network spec.,)
2) confirm that you want to connect your USB Cable modem to the USB cable modem service provider.
3) Is your Hardware identified?
4) Is your network identified.
5) Have you a dual boot linux system.

Just giving some questions to you to answer as your lack of answers to your (ahem) confusing post concerns me.

When I put up a panic sticken query for advice, I hope that people can straighten out my thinking for me so I am less panic, and more stricken. if you know what I mean.

i told you everything i know because that is what i know...

for number one... i have a PC with a AMD Athlon K size chip 1.333 ghz, 512 mb ddr ram, 32 mb GeForce 2 vid card, Sound Blaster Live, USB ZipDrive Burner... those are the only things i have attached along with of course a hard drive and a floppy drive... the hardrive is a WD 19 GB hard drive 5200 RPM.... thats all the info i know of on my computer... i do have a nic card but i didnt have it in on installation nor after did i ever put it in...i tried it before because ive installed both OS many times ... and both find it but redhat has trouble with it and mandrake finds it but still cant connect... so i use RedHat 9.0 to connect and if i get enough information i reinstall mandrake and try out the solutions and see if it helps... but so far nothing...

for number 2... they provided me with the cd's and the modem along with the cable to connect the modem and a cad 5 cable for one connection... i think they would understand that someone out there would use the usb on there modem or else it wouldnt be there.. plus i read about it and found out its a winmodem but linux supports a lot of winmodems and the linux's i use are supposed to be supported according to what i read... the modems info is above (all i know i mean) it displays the light on both mandrake 9.1 and redhat 9.0 but redhat is the only one to connect...

for number 3... i explained above i think... but if i didnt, the hardware was found on both OS but on Mandrake it finds the Ambit modem but it doesnt have a modulator or something... and it places it under the unknown devices. Redhat finds everything fine BUT for some reason redhat is really glitchy on me and i have noooo idea why... redhat cant connect to my cd's id or whatever and says it will have errors running gnome, but still connects to the internet... plus it randomly restarts, logs me out causing me to log back in (which happened while typing this once), and sometimes logs me into the dos based setting, or sometimes just freezes on me....

for number 4... they find everything but mandrake wont connect...

for number 5... i tried once but it wouldnt allow me for somereason... so i just go through the tedious installations between the two when i get enough info online with redhat ill install mandrake clearing my hardrive and installing it according to the installation... and then try to fix accordingly... but if it didnt work ill uninstall it reinstall redhat and connect asking for more info...

sorry that im a total newbie to this.. to tell you how much of a newbie i am, it took me a week to figure out how to log into root.... so sorry if im being rude during this its just im very irritated about this matter and really want to use mandrake linux... and not redhat if its so glitchy....

oh and this is what it says when i log on and i have to click log on anyways....

Could not look up internet address for x1-6-00-02-8a-32-b1-3f.
This will prevent GNOME from operating correctly.
It may be possible to correct the problem by adding
x1-6-00-02-8a-32-b1-3f to the file /etc/hosts.

but im still able to get online with redhat

OK - this is going to be the blind leading the blind here so bear with me ....

Try 'dslreports.com' as there are a lot of people there who are very up with high speed connections, and some with linux. They may have some ideas about hardware requirements for your type of modem thing. The modulation error you are talking about seems to be a hardware configuration / identification thing.

Try http://www.dslreports.com/forums/all.\

I'll keep thinking on this by the way and searching out more info.

BTW - it is midnight here ...

Your hardware configuration still isn't completely clear to me. Do you have a usb connection from your computer to your cable modem?
It sounds like you also have an ethernet card in your computer? If so, is the card working? If so, is there a reason you don't connect the cat5 cable from your computer's ethernet card to the cablemodem's RJ45 port?

no i dont have a network card installed on my computer, i have a usb to the modem. I think the modem has one in it but im not sure. If you need more info on my hardware tell me how to get it because im a total to this linux stuff and dont quite know where to get any information... little on fix anything. this is how the modem and stuff is set up:

1) cable from wall to modem
2) cad 5 main cable from back of modem to splitter and split to 3 or 4 different things... not my computer though
3) the usb connection in the back is connected to my usb port on my computer

Im able to get on with redhat with it like this and not on mandrake 9.1

Ive tried installing mandrake and redhat both with my card before but they found it but i couldnt connect with it. I had used this card previously on windows xp so i know the card works. But ive reinstalled these OS's many times with and without the card trying to find out the problems. For right now, i have installed redhat 9.0 without the network card in and dont have it in right now. I am connected to the internet with redhat via usb, but network card and usb seem to have problems with Mandrak 9.1

Tell me how to get some of the info u need and ill get it for you.
-Thanks-
