I was never able to get a crossover cable network to work either in linux and that's with two linux boxes. And I tried damn near everything. So if someone knows the secret, I'd be interested as well. I finally broke down and bought a linksys router firewall for $40, primarily for sharing my cable internet connection. Added bonus, networking with dhcp through the router was simplicity itself. Your trying to network a windows and linux box so you'll need samba. I don't think that's possible with a crossover cable. But hey, I couldn't get two linux boxes to work with a crossover cable.
I dont; kno why I missed it before but you wwill need to use private IP addresses on the crossover. Try:
Win98: 192.168.1.5
Linux: 192.168.1.6
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
