[B]OK - After much messing about, I seem to be no fiurther on? I can see and access shares on my laptop FROM my desktop (main & internet connected) PC, but not the othre way round?
Laptop - 192.168.1.20
Desktop - 192.168.1.1 with connection/print sharing
Internet connection sharing & print sharing all work. But I can't ping 192.168.1.1 from my laptop?
I think it may be a firewall issue, but I don't know how to resolve this if it is. Basically I need to make 192.168.1.20 a trusted connection on my Firewall?
An
Run ifconfig and check the netmask is 255.255.255.0 on each. Install ethereal from CD2 and run it, "Start Capture", with boxes "Update list of packets in real time" and "Automatic scrolling in live capture", you can then capture and see the network traffic at both ends, you should be seeing "arp who has 192.168.1.1" and get a reply "192.168.1.1 is at <colon seperated MAC address>", click on any line to get full details.
e.g I just did "ping barrabas" and it displays " ICMP Echo (ping) request", followed by "Echo (ping) reply", I also see a couple of lines -- from barrabas -- "ARP Who has 192.168.10.3? Tell 192.168.10.1", then "ARP 192.168.10.3 is at 00:20:ed:2b:ff:41".
