Making Linux 'detect' a network connection

Hi Everyone,

This is my first time posting on this forum. Forgive me if I sound like an uber-nubie!!

Here's my question - Lets say I booted my Linux box w/out having the network cable connected. What is the shell command you can use to get Linux to detect a network connection once you've re-connected the cable? I thought I remembered it being something like "eth0 -up", but obviously, that didn't work.

Thanks in advance for any help!!

-Mike

Hey,

Most likely, the command you want is 'ifconfig eth0 up' That will bring the interface up, but it will still lack an IP address. To give it an IP addy over DHCP, just type 'dhcpcd' and if a server is available it will grab an IP and bring up the interface. if you need to assign an address to the device 'ifconfig eth0 up 192.168.1.1' should do the trick. Oh, and make sure that you are root through all of this or you won't get very far

Hope that helps.

Hey thanks! The first part of your instructions worked, however, the 'dhcpcd' command wasn't understood. Do I need to be in a certain directory?

You actually use the dhcp client. dhcpd is the server.
