Make system wait until DHCP has completed

Hello all,

I am having a frustrating problem with DHCP in Ubuntu hardy.

The DHCP system here takes around 10 seconds to retrieve an address.

I am having two problems.

1. The system doesnt wait for DHCP to get an address back so it continues to start services that depend on a network address. How can I get the system to wait until an address has been acquired before it starts more services.

2. The DHCP client executes during boot sometimes doesnt get any offers, but when I either login through gdm or run the client manually it works.

Any help appreciated.

why not get your ip address from the DHCP server, then set it as the static address?
