mailservers....do you need a DNS server to run one?

Hello,

My aunt started a charter high school and I have agreed to make a fileserver which will also function as a mail server and a webserver for an intranet. I am currently hosting the mail on my domain but I am trying to bring the email in-house. Do I need to set up a DNS server to effectively run the mail server from the school?
