you need to be a little more detailed than this is you want real help....

basically you need an SMTP server running. most popular ones are qmail, postfix, exim and sendmail. pick one, go read the documentation on it and come back if you have a particular iussue with the configuration of your chosen package.

is it a home mailserver or business? If business, I recommend you use a commercial app like Nod32... saved my windows boxes everyday... with Linux protecting Exchange and the DTs... if home, you can cron freshclam.

Richard

Or you could download contribs.org's version of sme sever, it is a full blown mail server thats is very easy to install. Then all you do is download and run a small script that will install a host of addtional programs for your mail server, of which some of the programs are anti-virus, anti-spam and encrypted IMAP, POP3 and SMPT. It may take the learning out of setting up a mail server, but atleast it will get you a full working server running in under a hour.

ok...

thanks for the good word.

it is a company on a server 2003 AD network and this mail server is not only setup ...it has been for a long time and has extensive email groupings aliases and anything else that would make a migration a pain in my "not knowing a helluva lot about linux" butt.

it sounds like freshclam is my avenue of choice due to a small issue of having a penny pinching company to work for.

so thanks for the suggestions and the commands.

one more question about this server...

i have backupexec 9 running on a server 2000 machine and a unix remote location backupexec service running on the sendmail box. it has never really run quite right to my knowledge (i haven't been with the company long, so i'm going by word-of mouth here). Recently backupexec has been unable to attach to the service on the sendmail server. nothing has been changed and the log for the failed back-up doesn't give me anything to go on. is there someway i can deduce that the failing back-up is either caused by or not caused by the backupexec service on the sendmail server. might the timing of the clamav scan be interupting it? on another note....i haven't really heard very good things about the backupexec service that runs with linux. is there a log that i might be able to check? (oh, a last note, ...it's not a permissions issue...i have gotten that far.)

,

thanks again

Yes an established server would be difficult to migrate too, especially if your new too linux, I thought it may have been a recent setup.

backupexec issue

i do appreciate the word, thanks foto & rkettle.

any experience with backup exec?

i'm thinking about backing up to an external hdrive a few times a week and nixing the bkupexec service (due to not being able to sort out the prob and thinking it may have to do with the software itself ). if i were to do this, what might a decent low cost backup software to run with it (ofcourse i'm hoping it's easy to set up...but if it's not i'll figure it out

any experience in this regard?

,

jtdodge

I use rsync on a number of servers for local and remote backup, fast secure and free. Run it nightly, hourly whatever.

Glad i could help in some way, unfortunately i have no experience with backup exec.

I would go for an external drive since there getting cheaper now so there are more cost efficient and faster to backup the data than cd's or dvd's especially with usb 2.

If you chose to go this way I would suggest buying atleast 2 or 3 drives and rotate them, just in case the data gets corrupted on one as you backup you can then have atleast one good drive with data on it to return too. And also you should think of possibly putting it onto a permanent media to store in a safe place every week or month.
