Mac on Debian network can't see network or printers
I am not much of a Unix/Linux user (my linux box happily mumbles to itself in the corner without my ever interfering); however:
I have a new Mac G5 on my home network (Debian, running gateway, network and printers). PCs on the network happily see the Mac but the Mac can't see the network even though it happily accepts files sent from the PC. Mac also cannot find any printers, but it happily sees the internet, so somewhere someone something on the network must know the Mac exists...
1) Have the Linux machines got Samba or Netatalk (Appletalk for Linux) installed?
With Netatalk, you should be able to see the other PCs in the network (so something's wrong if you can't), but while Mac OSX uses Samba it cannot browse the network through it. Instead:
2) Click on the desktop to get Finder in the menubar, select Go>Connect to Server, and in the dialogue type "smb://<PC name>/<share name>". This should mount the shared directory.
Thanks for that Robhogg - got into my Linux box real easy however *this* message popped up when I tried to access the PC:
Connecting to Server
Connecting to smb://blah blah
"The operation cannot be completed because one or more required items cannot be found (Error code -43)"
<Try again> <Cancel>
I have fossicked around in my PC and disconnected the firewall (not that it was doing much), made sure that all shared files are still shared (not changed) and added a user password just in case the mac could not handle a null.
Accidently found it by trying different commands - and what worked (and well I might add) was smb://<server name> - I did not add the <user name> bit. Found all my shared folders on the PC.
