Mac Error Code 69

Hi
I've installed linux slackware kde 3.4 on a new machine. I am having problems with sftp. The secure ftp establishes a connection with a remote server but while I try to download files the following error shows up:

Disconnected; MAC error (Message authentication check fails.)
Warning: child process (/usr/local/bin/ssh2) exited with code 69.

I checked out the error code 69 and it is a checksum error. I think a faulty hardware device is the reason for this error but I don't know how to fix it. I'd really appreciate if someone can help me.

Thanks.
