Should ifconfig work to change MAC for any ethernet card?

Or not?

i don't see why it shouldn't...

I believe the MAC address for a ethernet or wifi card are hard coded into the actual card. This cannot be changed. Routers are able to spoof their MAC address, but that is a slightly different matter, those are built with that function.

While the MAC of ethernet cards are hardcoded, according to man ifconfig it is possible in some circumstances.

Set the hardware address of this interface, if the device driver supports this operation.
