Lost SMTP send capability after upgrade

Hi Group
I have just upgraded my Slackware from 9.1 to 10.1 and can no longer send email from Kmail . Message is vague "could not connect to host". Is there a diagnostic or log file maintained by the K suite, and Kmail in particular, where I can look? Receive (POP) mail works fine.
I changed nothing in the KMail config entries, so it appears the Upgrade impacted some property.
Grateful for any assistance.
George

Please ignore the prior post: I have rectified the changed SMTP entries.
