I reverted my openSUSE 10.3 installation to an earlier partition image, and I haven't been able to use my toast.net dsl under openSUSE 10.3 ever since. For one, I'm having to start smpppd manually using rcsmpppd start (using su root). I can get kinternet to connect, but firefox and thunderbird just show a twirly cursor, nothing loads; eventually kinternet disconnects, claiming "inactivity" in the log. I've tried manually entered DNS 205.133.7.2 for primary, 206.244.186.1 for secondary (these are from the toast.net support page for older Macintosh systems), also automatic DNS retrieval. I can't get an internet connection to work and I'm furious about having to boot to Windows XP. I already looked at the DNS tutorial on this site; it didn't help. I hope someone has a clue how to fix this...

What do you exactly mean by reverted.
I use before open suse 10.3 32 bit version
After it I install open suse 10.3 64 bit version
The 32 bit version is still there it even offers me as a choice
when I boot up
But if I like to use again for all the functions I have to repair the file system because a some files are locked it also displays

I wouldn't install 32-bit Linux on an Athlon 64 X2; my openSUSE 10.3 is all 64-bit. My reversion referred to a partition image backup (I use Terabyte IFL), which was still 64-bit.
Nobody answered in so long that I re-installed openSUSE 10.3 (x86_64, 64-bit) from media. I have my toast dsl back, but I have to type rcsmpppd start as a root user, and then start kinternet. The whole thing isn't automatic as before, and I don't know why.

You said you have to start up kinternet I use kinternet in the time I use
a dial up modem, now not any more.
But from time that I did use it I can remember that I have to put the
settings in that way that a user can dial up.(users privilege)
Another thinks was should kinthernet startup at boot time ore manually
Kinternet also needs to know the number he should dial my provider
and my my password

I have a fixed dsl line now I have to configure once or if shut down the power on the modem for more than 24 hours

Toast dsl won't let me logon without sending the password and username, so I use kinternet. Yes, I did configure in Yast, under dsl in network devices, to enable use under kinternet as a non-root user. This makes no difference, I'm still stuck having to type rcsmpppd start as a root user, before I can use kinternet for the dsl.

As I said I have fixed dsl line and I also have a hard modem
AS my modem is conected to a ethernet card I have to configure my ethernet card first

When I used the modem for the first time I start up my web browser
and give it in the field of the http the ip adress of my modem
Most modems of same brand and type has the same ip adress
My modem is a speedtouch


Then I can enter the modem setup and configure it with my providers name
my accounts name by the provider and password

It also give the chance to test my internet connection
