losing network connection

About once or twice a day, or sometimes only once every other day I lose my network connection completely.

When it's working it runs fine. When it doesn't it can be down for about an hour and I can't access anything on net or lan, TX goes up and RX stays on ifconfig.

I'm using a Winbond Electronics W89C940 with ne2k-pci module. I don't have a spare card to test atm.

I get the connection back after switching cables and reconfiguring the eth0 through YAST but I can't recreate the problem so I'm not sure if it's coincidental.

Any ideas? Thanks!

After you've 'lost' your connection what output does ifconfig eth0 give you. If this is still setup correctly then it looks more like a hardware problem, if it has lost its settings from there then it must be software, although I've never heard of it happening in any distro before. You using DHCP or a static IP?

cheers

Jamie...

Sounds similar to problems I was (note hopeful past tense) having with my ADSL. Almost surely, it has been a problem at the switching office of the service provider (in this case the telephone company).

Recycling my modem would fix it every time, but sometimes I had to recycle more than once, or recycle every five minutes or less! But for the past two weeks there has been continuous connection. I haven't changed anything on my system, so that, to me, confirms that it's a problem on down the line.

Hope yours clears up too.

Thanks.

I'm using static IP. The other computer (Win XP) on the LAN is never affected. From memory I don't think I've lost any settings (using ifconfig) but I might have fiddled before checking. On all times I've looked RX has been at 0 although that might be after I've tried resetting and not had luck. All times when I load YAST up I see all the settings are still the same. I will check ifconfig next time it happens before playing around .

Cheers.
