Does anyone in here uses the "Look UltraFast™ DSL Internet" as their ISP or another ISP that uses ADSL modems instead of cable modems?

I'm about to swich from a cable modem ISP and wonted to know how different the network setup of a cable modem vs an ADSL modem is?
(right now I've got 1_cable_modem + 1_router + 4_PCs)

as I've read on the www.look.ca site :

The DSL high speed modem is "plug & play". On the CD ROM sent to you with the modem, you will find a simple software that activates the modem.

Has anyone set up an ADSL modem with Linux / BSD OS only? Or do I really need their special "simple software" to "activate the modem" .. if the ADSL modem is configured by Look's DHCP server then what's there to "activate"?

Often you will find that DSL modems are USB devices, and they usually don't work well in Linux (hardware companies too focused on Windows users?). However, most DSL/cable providers *do* offer regular DSL modems which you connect to using a common Ethernet network card. Call them and ask if they are willing to provide you with a non-USB modem if you sign up.

I just checked Look's system requirements page and it seems it is a non-USB modem after all, so connecting to it shouldn't be a problem. If they use pppoe for authentication that might cause some problems but I guess that's a headache we'll save for later.

When installing mandrake 9.1 (my only experience), It lets you select a method of hooking to the net. DSL is one of the choices trhen asks a couple of questions. Viola! you are done..

I use sbc's dsl service with the pppoe. It was surprisingly simple, I used kde's network setup for a xdsl and it worked first try.
