Logging on to WINS with Linux

First, I've never actully used Win NT (at least it's multi-user over network part) or Linux so I probably have no clue what I'm talking about .

I was wondering if there was a way to get Linux to log into a Windows NT server using domains. The current set-up is Win98 clients show a Windows Networking screen with username, password, and domain boxes. Logging-in causes a drive to be mapped with many folders, but each user has read/write permissions for only one (done with NTFS I assume). I want to know if a Linux box could be used to log into the same network.
I wanted to know this for the possiblity of convincing my school of switching to Linux, at least for the client computers.

Once Samba is setup, you have to create a machine account on the PDC. Then on the command line you have to type smbpasswd -j abc -r abcPDC, if your domain name is abc and the name of your primary domain controller is abcPDC.
