I have a linksys lne100tx nic and i am trying to get my ethernet connection to work at school...i do the network setup on the terminal and my switch shows that there in a connection (it didnt before i knew how to do this) when i try and ping my IP in the terminal it says the network is unreachable...i feel like the hardware is not installed or detected...i am pretty new at this so i dont know what to do this point
try "ifconfig" in the console, if it doesnt show the details for the interface then try "lsmod" this should show you the module for the NIC, and you can check /var/log/messages to see if your card is recognised( it should be )
redhat does recognise the card. My friends system has this card and i installed linux on it.
well why dont we make the matter simple!!!!! type "kudzu" in the console. it should launch an application which recognises the new hardware and then you can configure it
( if there is a /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 file remove it first )
ok manthram, thanks to your help i now hove my ethernet card recognized and configured...however, i STILL cannot access a webpage...it will say: "www.something.com could not be found. Please check the name and try again." i dont get it cause netscape says that im online...what could it be
Sounds like you're not picking up the nameserver addresses. I think the network configuration thing in control panel will let you pick dhcp and should config the nameservers for dhcp.
Or you can put the nameserver addresses in /etc/resolv.conf
nameserver xxx.xx.xx.xxx
nameserver yyy.yy.yy.yyy
Of course you'll have to supply the correct addresses
