little samba local networking question
Im running a little network, with my laptop (linux) and my desktop (XP), and a d-link router in between to access the internet.
i have samba installed on the linux box, the gui gnomba, shows me the win xp machine as a little icon. However, when i double click the icon, a authentication dialog appears, and prompts me a username and password. I have never chosen a password in the windows machine, so there shouldn't be any. My other box's running winxp, just logs in, whitout any authentication. How do I come past this...? |
can we assume that you have tried entering your username and no password?
Ensure you have something shared on the XP box and try the console smbclient smbclient //<XP MACHINE>/<SHARE> -U <username> |
yes i have, but i dont even have a username. normally i just enters the workgroup, and then i can see all availible machines and shares

Is something needed on the xp box for me to access it from linux, now that I dont have a username and password.. ?
I really would like this to work, so that i can transfer stuff from the xp box to my linux and visa versa. I really hope this can work without pass and login, cause then I can access different computers at school, also. |
Araldit,
If you haven't created any account at all on the XP laptop then it's probably automatically logging in to the desktop using the 'Administrator' account. Using a Windows system as Administrator and enabling networking with no passwords on accounts is very high risk, and I'd strongly recommend that you setup a user account and passwords before going any further with this. Once you have given a username and password, you should only need to be asked again on a Windows network when the machine you're trying to connect to won't accept those details (because it's a different domain). |
