yes i am a linux newbie just installed slackware 8.1 on my laptop with is a toshiba satellite 440CDT so its a 133Mhz pentium with 16mb of ram and 1.4gb of hdd and a Xircom Creditcard ethernet card (10mbit) anyway enough of my bitchen laptop . Now as the subject suggests the INET service doesnt start this is what happens when i boot

You may wish to try configuring your NIC to use a static IP address. Make sure to set your subnet mask, gateway, DNS, etc as well. Also, confirm you have the correct speed/duplex settings.
Some network services fail if the eth0 does not launch properly.
Either way, you will need to fix this if you want your system to actually communicate accross a TCP/IP network.
