Linux Newbe questions:: How to set up a Apache server (RH 8)

Ok, I have never used Linux before (except just looking, etc.), and I need some help.

I have installed RH 8, configured the network, and all the trimmings (figured that out on my own)

What I need now, is help with setting the box up as a webserver.

I have regestered with No-IP.com, as I am on a cable internet service which uses a dynamic IP, and want to use that as my hosting solution.

Don't laugh ( ), but I ned help with:

Installing the No-IP client
Configuring the Apache server to work with No-IP (and setting it up so that it can host web pages)
Setting up a FTP somehow
Installing MySQL
Updating php to latest build

As previously stated, the only Linux experience I've had was installing the stuff, and a bit of pokeing/prooding to make it connect to my network, so don't be suprised if I ask stupid questions

I am using the following:

PII 350
96 MB RAM
Quantum 9.1 and WD 6.4 HDs, Windows 2000 RH8.0 dual boot
D-Link 530TX and DWL 900AP+ access point (to connect to wireless network)
Cable internet (connected to wireless router).

Thanks for your help

Also, although slightly unrelated, how do you run the update wizard from GIMP?

Thanks!

Alright, I just got my Apache up and runnng with dyndns.org. First, you need to get Apache running locally first. You need to modified the httpd.conf file in /etc/http/conf. Next, start the httpd service manually at the prompt "service httpd start". You need to set httpd start at boot by these command:

"chkconfig --list | grep httpd" ----->check to see if httpd run as service and if it on. If yes, you are set.

If not, you need to type this command:

"chkconfig --level 2345 httpd on" ---> this will set httpd to turn on at init 2345

If htttpd is not even one of the services. You need to add it with this command:

"chkconfig --add httpd"

At this point, your website should be up and running. Open up Mozilla and go to http://yourmachinename or IP

If this bring up the Apache test page. Apache is now ready for your personal page. You should read the documentaton from http://www.apache.org

As for www.no-ip.com, I don't know anything about it. I'm currently updates my IP manually on dyndns.org. I can't seem to get ddclient to work right on my machine. If you are planning to install FTP or mail on your machine. You should consider install SSL on your server as well. I hope this help.

I too know nothing about no-ip, but I do know that practically all of the cable modem operators block port 80, so you'll need to run your webserver on a port other than that.

When you get around to the configuration of apache, choose a port like 81 and reference your machine as, for instance, http://blob.no-ip.com:81

Slick.

Ok, thanks guys, that helped a little.

I still don't have the configuration stuff figured all out, here is the stuff I still need to do:

Get Apache running (configured correctly)
Install MySQL
Update PHP to latest build
Make PHP avalible to Apache
Setting up FTP
And a guide to installing stuff, like no-ip, or other packages!

Thanks for all your help!
