Linux networking noob: What am I doing wrong?

I'm trying to network two machines running SuSE Personnal 9.1 via a peer-to-peer network crossover cable, and I think I have everything set up right, and I can have the systems ping each other all day, but I am unable to access content on either one. I have put folders in my /home folder in the /etc/exports to be accessed by my entire "workgroup" according to a Linux book I bought (doesn't go far into networking at all!) (lectraplayer.net). One system is named BigBox and another is named Portable. What must I do to access content of the other system in Konqueror? Strangley, even with one machine running Windows, I cannot access the Samba (SMB) shared folders on my Windows machine, but with them both running Windows, I can share all day.

Have you setup SAMBA on your Linux box? /etc/exports is used for setting up shares for NFS (Network File System). You have to have an NFS client on your windows machine to access the NFS shares on the Linux box. Setting up SAMBA on your Linux box won't be difficult. Edit your smb.conf files to specify the folders you want to share and then get SAMBA running. Things should work.

Samba should be set up, I'm seeing the Samba Client in YaST and have set it up that way as far as I can. I thought Windows was a SMB-based network environment, though it is actually poorly suited for networking purposes compared to Linux in the hands of an experienced tech (like what I seem to need ). I'll try to look at those files and see what I can get to happen, but I would also like to share between the same two computers in a Linux/Linux setup (both Linuxes come from the same CD, SuSE 9.1 Personnal).

Is the /etc/exports the only file I need to adjust? I've already put in my entire Linux network "name" (I've named it lectraplayer.net) and the folders I want to share (maybe /home/user/shared). Seems like I've made them read-write with root_squash (takes away Root priveleges over the network to this folder, IE: squashes the Root user). Also, what's the proper format to put a certain machine in? Assume the machines on the network are "desktop" and "laptop". Is it desktop.lectraplayer.net or desktop@lectraplayer.net or something else?
