Linux, Netowrk Device missing

HI,
I had a RH9 system installed with 2.4.22 kernel and I upgraded to 2.6.4 kernel. The comilation worked fine ........ and everything rebooted fine. After the reboot, I could not get X to work (whole other problem of nousable screen config ......)

and my network devie was not found. Following is what I have dont to resolve the problem:

ifconfig and othe rnetowrk scripts like ifup ... say eth0: no such device

i also check /proc/net/dev and anothetr file in the same directory and it does not show the eth0 as a device

/dev does nto have eth0 as a device

I tried recreating the devices with the makedev.d script and that did not work also.

lspci does see the device

I compiled the new kernel and do see the new device drivers for it

Please advise on how should I get the device back (NIC is from Accton). Also how would I get all my startup scripts to work with it.

when I tried recreating the device, the scripts in /etc/makedev.d crashed because of supposedly unknown commands
