Question Linux - NAT

hi all,

i really do hope there is someone that can help me really urgently -

i have a pi MMX 200Mhz with 63MB Ram & 2GB HDD with a 56k modem that i want to use as a firewall & Router on my LAN - i want to use linux instead of windows to acomplish that.

i have used windows with kerio winroute pro to manage my ICS + NAT and had bysoft stayalive pro to keep my connection alive and to disconnect my modem every morning before pone company can bill me normal rates for a dialup - i want to change and use linux instead to do all this - for a couple of reasons - one of which is i hate micro$oft and two i love linux and use linux more often than micro$oft -

the thing is when i used the M$ system my speeds where all cool the highest avg i got for downloading was 5Kb/s but i run smoothwall and i don't even get 1Kb/s download now and my web sites strugle to load.

Whot i want most of all is NAT, and to be able to have the pc disconnect the modem at a preset time

distro's i have at this moment is Slackware 9.0, Mandrake 9.0 and Smoothwall 2.0 Express.

any help will be apreciated

Regards

You may need to tweek the mru/mtu settings for pppd. I think you put that in the file /etc/ppp/options but I'm not sure. Try man pppd for more info.

If you want to shut down at a specific time every day then cron will do that. All you need is a script like this:

#!/bin/bash
killall -9 pppd
/etc/ppp/ip-down

Then run crontab and add an entry like this:
0 6 * * * root /path/to/script

Then restart cron.

As for NAT, that is easy. Most Linux firewalls allow you to setup connection sharing. If you need help on that you'll have to choose a distro and firewall to get specific help.

This is an easy firewall to setup http://projectfiles.com/firewall/. And the documentation is easy to follow.
